The "Zombie Hunt" (ゾンビ狩り, Zonbi kari) is a game featured in Episode 2-3 (Season 3) of Alice in Borderland.
Players have to participate in minor card games and win either against the zombies or as zombies.
Overview[]
Set-Up[]
- Location: National Institute of Virus Research
- Player Limit: 64
- Time Limit: 20 rounds
- Starting Items: Seven playing cards
Rules[]
- The participants are divided into four teams of 16.
- Each player receives seven playing cards. The cards are used in one-on-one games at designated tables installed throughout the facility.
- Players have to place a card of the same suit as the hand dealt to them. The one with the highest cumulative total wins the game. The winning player receives one card from the losing player.
- The game contains three special cards: Zombie Card, Shotgun Card, and Vaccine Card.
- The Zombie card is given to one person in each group; it trumps every other card in the deck. The losing player becomes infected by the zombie, and a Zombie card is added to their hand.
- The Shotgun card can stop zombies from multiplying by eliminating them. Each player is guaranteed to receive a Shotgun card, and the card can be used at any point in time regardless of the placement of a Zombie card on the table. The card is ineffective against humans and disappears after being used once.
- The Vaccine cards are distributed randomly between members of each group. When the card is placed, it cancels out the Zombie card and turns the zombie back into a human. The Vaccine card cannot be used on oneself.
- It is GAME CLEAR if the player is on the side with the most players at the end of the game (zombies vs. humans).
- It is GAME OVER if the player is a zombie and gets eliminated by a Shotgun card.
- It is GAME OVER if the player runs out of number cards.
- It is GAME OVER if the player is on the side with the fewest players at the end of the game (zombies vs. humans).
Solution[]
The solution to the game is to turn all the participants into zombies. The likelihood of survival is higher for the zombies than for the humans, because their number increases exponentially with each round. The number of Vaccine cards is limited, and all the cards are one-time-use. Using a Shotgun card against a zombie can be effective for survival, but doing so requires a certain mindset, as not everyone is willing or capable of taking a life in a game.
Strategy[]
- Playing against the members of your team allows the team to keep all the cards between themselves instead of giving them to the opposing teams.
- It is not recommended to reveal one's role as a zombie, since it increases the risk of getting eliminated by the Shotgun card.
- Pretending to be a zombie and uniting the players by promising them a vaccine may prove to be a useful strategy for survival.
- Creating a trust barricade, where all team members are vaccinated and the zombies are threatened with a Shotgun card, can be an effective strategy. A riskier version of this approach would be for the infected player to name the one who gave them a Zombie card, and for the team to then eliminate that player.
- Zombie players can hide or build fortifications to defend themselves from zombie-killing participants.
