Shion (シオン, Shion) is a supporting character in Season 3 of Alice in Borderland. She is part of Arisu's Team. She is portrayed by Hyunri.
Appearance[]
Shion is a young woman with medium-length, straight dark brown hair parted in the center. She is dressed in a white blouse with narrow black trim and a small gold clasp at the collar, a black-and-white tweed jacket, high-waisted loose black trousers with a slim belt, and black shoes. She carries a slender cane, wears small gold earrings and a ring, and has natural makeup.
History[]
Prior to her arrival at the Borderland, Shion was the CEO of a startup company. She was once assaulted by a stalker and had a near-death experience, which is when she saw Banda and received a Joker card from him. Same as the other participants of the Joker Tournament, Shion had played the games before, making her Sojourn in Season 3 a return to the Borderland rather than her first visit. However, the games she experienced in the past were not the same ones faced by Arisu and his group. Since Borderland games are created and overseen by individual Citizens, their scale, rules, and format vary depending on who hosts them. Therefore, Shion's earlier participation took place under different Citizens, resulting in a distinct set of challenges.
Story[]
As Arisu walks into the shrine's territory, he sees 20 other participants, including Shion.
Shion during the "Sacred Fortunes" game
Hearing that the game is about to commence, Shion asks where everyone went, referring to the empty city, but nobody knows the answer. After the rules of the "Sacred Fortunes" game are explained, Shion repeats the part about "survive to the end" and wonders whether it means that they have to fight for their lives, but Natsu and Tetsu brush off the assumption. Shion whispers to Masato that Tetsu is on drugs.
After Tetsu draws the first fortune and nothing bad happens, Masato feels confident to continue, but Shion is suspicious and hesitates to play. The second fortune comes with a math equation, and the wrong answer sends three flaming arrows towards the crowd, killing two unnamed participants and causing panic. The third and fourth fortunes also cause destruction, and Shion attempts to draw the fifth one, "Small Blessing" (小吉, Shōkichi), which comes with a riddle: "At a zoo, 50 animals are flipping over one after another. On which turn did the lion flip over?" Shion looks confused and gives a random answer straight away, but the correct answer is 17, because LION flipped upside down is "NO I7". Thirty arrows fly towards the venue.

A few more mistakes cause more damage. By the ninth round, Natsu draws another "Small Blessing" and is ready to give up, but Shion cheers her up and asks her to read the question first. Natsu answers incorrectly, and 448 arrows are launched at the players, with one of them hitting Shion in the leg. She falls down, but Tetsu is quick to pull her away into hiding, where he attempts to remove the arrow. She screams as he does so, then he apologizes, takes off her blouse in order to make a bandage out of it, and stops the bleeding.
After Arisu draws the last fortune slip, the question is about the world population. Shion mentions that it increases by 80 million each year, and a few years ago it was about 7.88 billion. Arisu answers incorrectly, so he starts looking for an escape route and asks everyone for the unlucky directions they had on their slips. Eventually, the players figure out the safe zone of the venue and rush towards the exit, which ends up blocked by lasers. While everyone panics, Kazuya and Masato help Arisu lift up a stone to unlock the way into an underground tunnel. Then they all jump down and reach a notice congratulating them on clearing the game. Another noticeboard they bump into when they are out instructs them to proceed 17 km northeast, because the next game starts the next day at sundown. Walking slightly further, they see multiple blimps holding a massive Joker card.
Having found a shelter, the group relaxes. Natsu finds a cane and gives it to Shion. They build a relationship of trust, and Natsu starts calling her "big sister". Looking at their own Joker cards, everyone realizes that they received them from the same man while having a near-death experience.
By sundown the next day, the players reach the National Institute of Virus Research and enter the game venue, where they see eight more participants. They listen to the rules, and the "Zombie Hunt" game begins.
Shion teams up with Sachiko for the first few rounds of mini-games and wins at least one of them. After Arisu explains the rules of the Joker Tournament, Shion points out that last time she played the games there was a lot more freedom. Later, Arisu brings over two women with Zombie cards and suggests looking for Vaccine cards. Then Rei introduces her plan to survive without the need to kill anyone.
The strategy is spread out between the other participants, but they soon decide to start killing the zombies instead. Shion is present when Kazuya comes back with blood on his face.
Shion informs Arisu that they have all become zombies
Shion is present when Nobu is tasked with killing another player, while Arisu is punched. She walks around with Sachiko and then witnesses the shift when Ikeno orders the group to start hunting down the players who might be hiding their Zombie cards. She is confident when Ikeno looks at her in an attempt to analyze whether she is suspicious, so he ignores her. Then she, Natsu, and Sachiko find a secluded spot to stay off the radar.
Later, Nobu joins them and explains Arisu's plan: ensure they are all zombies because the zombies are going to win. The game ends, and Shion and the others survive. They leave the venue and see another noticeboard with directions to a new game two days later. They find a quiet, safe place to get some rest, and Shion brushes Natsu's hair, for which Natsu calls her "big sister" but Shion denies it with a smile. Then Natsu notices that Arisu is not sleeping, and Shion assumes that he is thinking about his wife.
Shion and the other members of Arisu's team participate in the "Runaway Train". Their train approaches the end of the line, and an announcement instructs the players to stop it. Arisu decides to pull a lever, but it turns out to be an accelerator, so he pulls another one. However, it is too late, and the train crashes, leaving everyone with injuries of varying severity.
Shion looking at Arisu
Having reached safety, everyone is worried about Arisu's well-being because he took the biggest hit. His wounds are bleeding, and he is unconscious. Shion supports Sachiko's words about Tetsu's medical skills, reminding him that he stopped the bleeding when she was shot with a flaming arrow and saved her leg, allowing her to keep walking. Tetsu agrees and tries to patch the wound.
When Arisu wakes up the next morning, everyone rushes towards him to see how he is feeling. He asks when the next game is, and Shion informs him that it starts at sunset, so he tries to get up while Shion holds his head and tells him to lie down longer.
The next game they join, a semi-final challenge, is called "Kick the Can". During Round 2, Shion gets a can from Natsu and tries to escape, but multiple male participants corner her, attempting to take it away. Shion is pressed against the balcony when she spots Arisu downstairs, so she throws the can to him. However, someone else pushes him away, and the can lands on the floor, exploding on impact.
Shion finds a fake can
After Sachiko clears the game, Natsu and Shion pick up the next can and run across the hall. Natsu gets jumped and pinned down by a male participant, so she gives the can to Shion and tells her to move forward. Shion escapes and gets attacked by another player, but Tetsu pulls him away from her. While lying on the floor, Shion notices multiple cylindrical containers that look very similar to the can they are fighting for, so she throws one to Tetsu and urges him to run. The opponents follow him without realizing that Tetsu's can is fake.
Shion reaches the escalator with the real can in her hands, but a man blocks her way and tries to retrieve it. While they struggle, the can slips out of Shion's hands and explodes, killing them both.
