Rui Hibino (日比野瑠衣, Hibino Rui) is a minor character in Alice in Borderland, who participates in the Jack of Hearts game, "Solitary Confinement".
Appearance[]
Hibino is a girl in her mid to late teens with short black hair and long bangs. She is seen wearing a school uniform and a headband.
History[]
Hibino's story prior to Jack of Hearts remains unknown; however, she must have played enough games during the First Stage to make it to the Second Stage and survived the King of Spades' onslaught long enough to join the Jack of Hearts game.
Story[]
Hibino is one of the players waiting for more people to arrive at the game venue. When the game starts, she is the first to notice the symbol on Akitomo Mino's collar. She is unsure whether it is a good idea to share the symbol immediately, but then Urumi Akamaki informs her that she also has a symbol on the back of her collar. Hibino tries to take a peek but fails to see it.
In the first round, Hibino listens carefully to Masaki Aizen's interpretation of the game. After Ippei Oki decides to form a team, she quickly joins. She mentions that she was separated from her usual group due to the specialty of the game, as they believed they would have ended up killing each other. While walking around the prison, Hibino notices that all the windows are barred instead of glass, so there is nothing that could become a mirror to help the players see their symbols. She also recalls that all metallic objects were forbidden from being brough into the venue, since they can be used as reflective surfaces. After Motohiko Kaneko finds a large food storage, Hibino asks whether it means the game is intended to last a long time and whether the Jack of Hearts aims for a game of attrition.
In the middle of the round, Hibino and the others witness a fight between Akifumi Seto and Genki Kiryu. Hibino screams that Kiryu should not beat Seto, but Kiryu's deadly glare stops any resistance. After the wrestler leaves, Hibino and Ippei rush towards Seto.
Everyone survives the first round, and Round 2 begins. Hibino points out that the Jack of Hearts has not revealed himself in any way, and the others do not seem to bother with identifying him. She is present when Urumi demands to exclude Seto from the group but does not join the ultimatum.
By Round 3, Kakeru Kishoin suddenly approaches her too closely and stares into her eyes. She blushes and asks for an explanation, but he simply shouts that he cannot see his reflection in them because the room is too dark. He then comments that she looks red, and the next manga panel is zoomed out with only the sound of his short scream, implying she may have slapped him. Then she and the others witness another fight between Seto and Kiryu, resulting in both of their deaths. Hibino notices that Ippei cries and blames himself, but Kakeru remarks that Seto was the last person one would expect to behave that way, which makes her wonder if someone incited him.
Hibino makes it to Round 4, shocked to hear that three more people have been eliminated.
During Round 5, Urumi enacts her plan to lie to Kaneko. Hibino remains silent, looking down with guilt, and survives.
During Round 6, Urumi tells the group behind Hibino's back that they should eliminate her next, claiming that Hibino is against them. When it is her turn, they tell her that her symbol is Diamonds, while it is in fact Spades. Hibino believes the lie and declares the wrong symbol, which leads to her death.
Etymology[]
- The forename Rui consists of the kanji "瑠" (ru) (lapis lazuli) and "衣" (i) (clothing, garment).
- The surname Hibino is a combination of the three kanji: "日" (hi) (sun, day), "比" (bi) (ratio, proportion), and "野" (no) (field, wilderness).
