The Queen of Spades (スペードのクイーン, Supeedo no Kuīn), also known as "Checkmate" (ちぇっくめいと, Chekkumeito), is a game featured in Episode 5-6 of Alice in Borderland.
As a Spades challenge, the game tests players' physical strength, endurance, and dexterity. Due to its higher difficulty level, the Queen of Spades also requires combat proficiency.
Overview[]
Set-Up[]
- Location: Power Plant
- Player Limit: 16 vs. 4
- Time Limit: 5 minutes per round (16 rounds)
- Starting Condition: Each team has a king, both selected by the Queen of Spades.
- Starting Items: Each player has a vest with a button on its back. The Challenger Team's vests are blue and the Queen Team's are red.
Rules[]
Game result explanation
- The players, called the Challenger Team, face the Queen Team.
- The teams alternate taking turns for a total of 16 rounds.
- During their turn, the respective team has to chase the other team and press the buttons on their vest.
- If a player's button is pressed, the player receives an electric shock that renders them unable to move for the rest of the turn.
- In the next round, the player will become a member of the other team.
- The King is not allowed to change teams.
- After all sixteen turns, the team with the most members wins.
- It is GAME CLEAR for the players who are on the winning team.
- It is GAME OVER for the players who are on the losing team.
Details[]
Hand-to-hand combat is allowed. There is terrain around the venue that players can swing on and run along. Weapons are not forbidden by the rules directly, but no players are seen using them. If the Queen Team wins, all players on it are allowed to stay on the venue and continue to play alongside the Queen of Spades.
Strategy[]
Much like a game of Clubs, cooperation is vital for this game. However, with players constantly changing teams, keeping their loyalty proves difficult since players can be easily persuaded to join the other team in order to survive.
- Given the narrowness of the game venue, staying in a group is disadvantageous on the opponent's turn. The ideal strategy is to separate and keep moving to avoid being captured.
- Attacking a member of the other team to prevent them from capturing a teammate is possible as demonstrated by Risa herself.
- Forming small groups of two or three to chase a single opponent can prove successful as it allows the group to corner them.
