The Four of Diamonds (ダイヤの4, Daiya no Yon), named Light Bulb (でんきゅう, Denkyuu) is a game featured in Episode 5 of the Netflix adaptation of Alice in Borderland. In this version, Arisu joins Beach Executive Rizuna An in a game to prove his worth to the beach. Kuina and Tatta are also in the group alongside three unnamed members. It was the last numeric Diamond card needed at the Beach to assemble the full deck.
Game Overview[]
Rules[]
- In the room there is one light bulb and a door to an adjacent room where there are three switches.
- There is one switch that turns on the light bulb.
- With the door closed, players may flip any switch. While the door is open, players may only flip the switch once.
- The door will not close if there are people in both rooms or a switch is flipped.
- It is GAME CLEAR if a player correctly shouts out which switch turns on the light.
- It is GAME OVER if the water rises and touches the wires above OR the player touches the wires.
Solution[]
At first, the game seems like a game of luck. Players can flip one switch while the door is open, meaning they can eliminate one of the choices, leaving them with two switches remaining. This leaves the player with no guarantee of getting the answer right. This probability was believed to be 50%, but was corrected to 66%.
However, Arisu provided a strategy to test the other two switches. Because light bulbs get hot when turned on, one simply needs to test the switch with the door closed, then simply touch the bulb to feel if it is hot. If it is hot, this means that the bulb was on and is the correct answer. Arisu tested Switch B with the door open and eliminated the option, leaving him with A or C. He tested Switch A using this method and found the bulb was hot, proving that it was the answer.
Explanation of 66% Probability[]
Tatta states that after failing at the first switch, there is a 50% chance that they'll guess correctly, but An corrects him with 66%.
- The probability that the first tested switch will work is 33%.
- The probability that the first switch will not work is 66%.
- Of the 66%, there is a 50% chance that the next switch will work. 50% of 66% is 33%.
- Adding the probabilities 33% and 33% together, one has 66% of guessing the correct switch.
An's calculation accounts for the bulb lighting up when the first switch is flipped; Tatta's does not.
Differences in Netflix Adaptation[]
Game Differences[]
- The venue expands further to take place in an underground sewer reservoir
- The electrical wires were replaced with an entire electrical transformer
Plot Differences[]
- Hikari Kuina and Kōdai Tatta participate, with the former debuting in this game.
- While An was explaining the rules of the game, an additional player foolishly touches the wires and dies in the process.
- Instead of An solving the riddle on her own accord, she uses the game to test Arisu to see is he is fit to be an executive member of the Beach.
- Arisu is able to solve the riddle.
Trivia[]
- This was the first and only Diamonds game to be shown in the series.
