The Five of Spades (スペードの5, Supēdo no Go), also known as Game of Tag (おにごっこ, Onigokko), is a game featured in Episode 2 of Alice in Borderland (OVA).
Players have to find a safe zone and press buttons while avoiding a Tagger in the hallways of an apartment building.
As a Spades challenge, the game tests players' physical strength, endurance, and dexterity.
Overview[]
Set-Up[]
- Location:
- Player Limit: 11
- Time Limit: 30 minutes
- Starting Condition: The registration deadline is 6:00pm sharp. "It" begins to move at 6:05pm.
Rules[]
- Everyone in the complex will be running from the "Oni", also known as "It", or "Tagger", or "Horse Head".
- There is an unlocked room in the complex which is the "safe zone".
- It is GAME CLEAR if a player finds and touches the "safe zone" within the time limit.
- It is GAME OVER if the time limit is reached or if the "Oni" kills all the players.
- The exterior area of the building is packed with landlines. It is GAME OVER if a player decides to jump out of the venue.
Details[]
The "Oni" is a Dealer in charge of the game and is a muscular gun-wielding horse masked individual. The apartment complex is seven stories high and is shaped in an L. There are three stairwells, one on each end and one at where the two corridors intersect. Although it is not stated in the rules, two players are needed to clear the game. To deactivate the bomb, there are two buttons a distance away in the safe zone which have to be pressed simultaneously.

Solution[]
The safe zone is a room on the 4th floor. This is deduced by both Chishiya almost immediately and Arisu near the end of the game. Arisu notices that there are bullet holes against the walls, but the judging from the angle, the shots have come from a floor above. When the two unnamed players are on the 4th floor making their way to the door, the Tagger shoots at them from another floor, which is the only time the Tagger shoots at such a long distance. This explains the angle of the bullet holes. The two realize that the only reason the Tagger shoots from so far is to protect the correct door.
Strategy[]
- Participants can carry their own weapons, as Chishiya brings a pistol that he collected from an unknown source. Since the rules do not forbid it, bringing a weapon to a Spades game is a good strategy.
- It is not against the rules to assault or try to take down the Dealer, as Karube can be seen joining with two unnamed male participants (a wrestler and a military fanatic) to fight back against the Horse Head using fire extinguishers. However, Chishiya criticizes the plan upon its failure.
- After the game begins, Chishiya goes to the front of the southern staircase of the highest floor to observe the rest of the apartment building. This is the most powerful passive position to take, as from there the entire perpendicular branch can be seen. Through relatively safe observation, the location of all players and the Tagger can be tracked; and should the Tagger ascend to the 9th floor, escape is possible by running down the southern stairs. Should the Tagger climb up the southern stairs, it would be easy to hear, and there would be time to dash towards the central stairs.
- Players can escape the Tagger by climbing between floors. This is not forbidden by the rules, as Usagi does so several times while searching for the safe zone.

Trivia[]
- Unlike in the manga, the unnamed participant with a dark blue cap does not talk about the local urban legend of the apartment complex, however, the announcement still urges the players to exercise caution, since there is "a murderer on the loose".
- The game venue in the manga and OVA is L-shaped, while the one in the Netflix Series is T-shaped.
