Five of Spades, titled "A Game of Tag" is a game featured in Episode 2 of the Netflix adaptation of Alice in Borderland. It is a game where the players have to find a safe zone and press a button while avoiding a tagger in the hallways of an apartment building. This game was cleared by 6 players, mainly Ryouhei Arisu and Yuzuha Usagi.

Overview

Set-Up

  • Location: Toei Sendagaya Apartment
  • Player Limit: 16
  • Time Limit: 20 minutes
  • Starting Condition: 2 minutes after the rules have been stated, the game officially starts.

Rules

  • Run away from the "tagger."
  • It is GAME CLEAR if a player discovers the safe zone hidden in one of the building's rooms within the time limit.
  • It is GAME OVER if the time limit is reached without the safe zone discovered or if the tagger kills all the players. The time bomb hidden in the building will explode.

Details

The apartment complex is 7 stories and is shaped in an T. There is one stairwell at the end of the longest corridor. Although never stated in the rules, 2 players are needed to clear the game. To deactivate the bomb, there are 2 buttons on opposite ends of the safe zone which must be pressed simultaneously.

The taggers are dealers in charge of the game, both of which are uzi-wielding horse masked individuals. One patrols the halls, armed with a machete as well. The other hides, unknowing to the players, and guards the safe zone.

Solution

The safe zone was apartment 406, located on the 4th floor. This was deduced by both Arisu and Chishiya. When Tatta was on the 4th floor making his way to the door, the tagger shot at him from another floor, which was the only time the tagger shoots at such a long distance. The two realized that the only reason they shot from so far was to protect the correct door.

Strategy

One of the first things Chishiya did was take advantage of the power to charge a taser. Immediately after the game began, he went to the corner of the highest floor to observe the rest of the apartment. This is the most powerful passive position to take, as from there the entire perpendicular branch can be seen. From just observation, the location of all players and the tagger can be tracked; and should the tagger ascend to the 7th floor, escape is possible by sliding down the nearby gutter. The rules never stated that climbing around the structure was forbidden. This was done countless times by Usagi when searching for the safe zone and coming to Arisu’s help.

Trivia

  • In contrast to the Three of Clubs, the Five of Spades game had a lot of game and plot differences;
    • The time limit is 20 minutes instead of 30.
    • The inclusion of land mines surrounding the apartment building was omitted. Instead, players who attempted to leaved were simply lasered in the head.
    • The safe zone was entered through a second door in the unlocked room.
    • There is a second tagger who is hiding between the unlocked door and the safe zone.
    • The apartment was T-shaped instead of L-shaped.
    • The apartment had 7 floors instead of 9.
    • The apartment only had one stairwell instead of three.
    • The patrolling tagger exits from the elevator instead of the safe zone.
    • Morizono Aguni and Kōdai Tatta debuted in this game.
    • The two new beginner unnamed players were replaced with two females.
    • Arisu attempted to rally everyone to work together to clear the game, instead of Karube.
    • Karube had never assumed Arisu had been killed.
    • Karube teamed up with Aguni and an unnamed Beach member to fight the tagger.
    • After the game was cleared, Karube found out about the existence of the Beach through the deceased Beach member’s walkie-talkie.
    • Chishiya looted the tagger’s body and found an ambiguous sketch, which he later discovered was the subway station.
  • This was the second game played and the first Spades game.
  • This game had the highest debut of characters who become major later on.
  • Due to the long, narrow hallways, the game initially has always been rigged against the players due to the layout of the apartment making fleeing more difficult.
    • And the game is arguably even harder in the adaptation due to the fact that two of the stairwells were removed.
  • Arisu witnessing the tagger’s head getting blown off after receiving a Game Over might have been the sole reason he was so reluctant to cut his collar off in the later Seven of Hearts.
  • Although never stated, it is highly implied and likely that Aguni was overseeing Chishiya during the game as part of the Chishiya’s test to see if he is fit to be an executive at the Beach. This is just like Rizuna An overseeing Arisu in a later game to test his eligibility to become a Beach executive.
