Episode 3 is the third episode of the first season of Alice in Borderland.
Synopsis[]
With Chota and Shibuki's visas expiring that night, the four enter a vast botanical garden in Shinjuku, where they take part in a cruel game of betrayal.
Plot[]
In the uneasy tranquility of the shopping center, Arisu feels morally conflicted after killing the Tagger. Usagi gives him words of encouragement before parting ways.
Back at the shopping mall, Shibuki and Chota realize that their visas are close to expiring and that they must play a game that night. When night falls, the billboards lead the four of them to Shinjuku Botanical Garden.
Upon entering, they register by putting on a helmet with goggles, headphones, and a collar. The announcer reveals the game as "Hide and Seek", rated with the Seven of Hearts difficulty. They realize, to their horror, that this game is a dreaded Hearts game, which involves betrayal and playing with other people's hearts.
The rules are explained. One player is the wolf, and the others are lambs. When a lamb locks eyes with the wolf, they become the new wolf. At the end of the game, the collars of the lambs explode, leaving the wolf as the only winner. The group quickly realizes that since the wolf is the sole survivor, they must hide from the lambs.
Shibuki becomes the wolf and runs from the others. She gets into a violent skirmish with Karube, during which she accidentally transfers the wolf role to Arisu. Arisu flees and hides from the others, while Karube searches for him, and Chota restrains Shibuki. Arisu first attempts to remove his helmet using tools, but fails, remembering the Tagger and fearing that the collar will explode if tampered with.
After reminiscing about his past memories with Karube and Chota, Arisu decides to forfeit his life so another player can survive. He comes out to give the wolf role to someone else, but the others all decide to sacrifice their lives for him instead. They hide from Arisu and reflect on their happy memories together in their final moments. The timer ends, and their collars detonate, killing Karube, Chota, and Shibuki, and leaving Arisu as the winner and sole survivor.
