"Nine of Hearts, Part 5" (ハートの 9 パート 5, Hāto no 9, Pāto 5) is the fifth chapter of the first volume and the fifth chapter overall of the Alice in Borderland RETRY manga, written and illustrated by Haro Aso.
Summary[]
Yuzuru's dark past is revealed: he was a corrupt insurance company worker, whose decisions were only meant to help his career. He denied an insurance request to a woman whose husband was dying from stomach cancer, because of her not filling out the form correctly, and cynically smiled at her desperation.
Upon entering Hall 3, the players find themselves in a very hot environment surrounded by replicas of Egyptian landmarks. Yuzuru falls down, coughing up blood, and everyone panics. Kitou attempts to stop the bleeding but quickly realizes that saving Yuzuru is impossible, because his wound is too deep. Himari accuses him of purposely letting her father die, but Onoue supports Kitou's medical conclusion. Yuzuru volunteers to be the dropout of the round and tells the others to give him their "DEATH" cards to avoid the necessity to kill each other later.
Another flashback follows, and Yuzuru's past haunts him: he and Himari were at a restaurant when one of the waiters recognized him and yelled at him for ruining his family's life and profiting from it. After leaving the restaurant, Yuzuru and Himari had to walk in the rain, which is when Taiga ran past them, and the billboard incident soon followed.
Yuzuru accepts his fate and admits to all his wrongdoings, regretting how he lived before. He insists on receiving the "DEATH" cards, because he believes that otherwise the others would regret their choices as much as he does. His last request for them is to save Himari's life and make sure she receives the card to enter a shelter.
