Overview[]

Summary[]

The register beneath the TV starts printing a receipt. Arisu picks up the receipt, and the group read it together. It reads:

VISA

IMMIGRATION STATUS CERTIFICATION

ARISU RYOUHEI SAMA EARNED POINTS: 3 POINTS

TOTAL POINTS: 3 POINTS

LENGTH OF STAY IS UNTIL 7/14

PLEASE BE COGNIZANT OF YOUR REMAINING ALLOWANCE

REGISTRATION: ♣3

The register buzzes as a playing card comes out of a small slot in the machine. Ryohei Arisu takes the card, and it turns it over, it’s a Three of Clubs card. Then, the register prints a receipt and card for Chota Segawa. Chouta takes the card, and Daikichi Karube sees that the next receipt has his name. After that, Saori Shibuki walks up to the register and takes the playing card, but not the receipt. Arisu is confused, and asks why she doesn’t take her visa. Shibuki tells the group that she already knows what’s written on the visa. Karube approaches Shibuki, and demands that she tell the group what is going on.

Shibuki agrees to tell the group, but says they should head to the hospital nearby first. This is because there is a chance of tetanus for Chouta’s wound; they can scavenge for useful items at the hospital. She agrees to explain what is happening to the group along the way.

Shibuki tells the group that this world is called “the Borderlands”. As the group get out of the sewers and up to the surface, Shibuki warns the group that what she is about to tell them is based only on the conjecture and rumours from other participants of “the game”, and that there are no certainties at all.

Shibuki continues to explain, “Outside of us, there are a large number of people in the borderlands. What we all seem to have in common, was witnessing those fireworks, on that day, at that time. “The game” begins every night after sunset. The events take place at various places: the school, the bank, the factory, the station. But all the venues are lit up, so as to easily be found.”

As the group walk through the streets of Tokyo, an explosion can be heard nearby. Chouta panics, but Shibuki says that happens when a time limit is reached in a game. A loud, robotic voice can be heard from the exploded building, “Game Over.” Arisu still had a mountain of questions to ask, but the group reached the hospital.

At the hospital, Shibuki injects Chouta’s arm with a fluid. She read how to do it in a book, and is hoping that it helps Chouta with the pain. Chouta vigorously thanks Shibuki in admiration, congratulating her and telling Shibuki that she knows everything. Shibuki thanks Chouta, but says that she is the weakest of the group. Chouta reassures her, saying that’s not true. As Shibuki responds, she is cut off as Karube barges into the hospital room carrying a plastic bag. He opens the plastic bag, showing Chouta and Shibuki the canned foods he’d scavenged. Karube asks where Arisu is, and Shibuki responds by saying he went on a walk around the hospital.

Karube sets the bag of food down on the foot of Chouta’s hospital bed and tells him to eat food to help with his wound healing. Chouta sits up in bed and thinks about the Borderlands. He theorizes that the people who fired the arrows were aliens, or maybe humanity was already destroyed by aliens and that the stragglers like them are put into games for entertainment. Chouta holds his head in his hands, crying. Saying, “I just don’t know anymore.”

Chapter 4 Chouta Panel

Arisu hangs out on the hospital roof, looking at the horizon. Arisu thinks about how lucky he is to be alive after the game, then he starts to walk back to the group. On his walk through the hospital, he hears panting from one of the storage rooms. Peeking into the nearby room, he sees a man on the floor panting and wheezing in a cold sweat. A shocked Arisu asks the man if he is also a participant in the games, but the shell-shocked man starts to shout. He shouts at Arisu, declaring that all of his friends are dead. The man stands up and begins to walk towards Arisu, screaming that he quits the game.

Chapter 4 Arisu Roof

He slams the door in Arisu’s face. Back at the hospital room, Shibuki looks out of a large window across Tokyo. She looks at her watch, telling Karube and Chouta that the game is going to end soon. Karube goes to the window, whilst Chouta watches from his bed. As her watch ticks down to midnight, Shibuki hangs her head and says, “If you’re going to continue living here, you should all take a good look.”

Arisu, now panicking, starts banging on the door to the storage room. He looks at the man and demands that the man tells him what he is planning to do. The man calmly explains to Arisu that his visa ends today.

When the clocks strike midnight, Shibuki, Chouta and Karube watch through the window as dozens of lasers shoot down from the dark night sky and through the roofs of buildings. As a laser strikes the hospital and kills the man in the storage room, Arisu falls back. The door’s window is coated in a layer of the man’s blood. Arisu finally understands. He recalls back to his receipt, and realizes that the three points earned means three days left in the Borderlands until his visa expires. He looks at the dead man whose visa just expired. Arisu now knows that if he wants to survive in this country, from now on he has to continue participating in these games of his own accord to increase his visa.
