“ | Yeah... Of course we're friends. That's why I can't forgive you. I can't forgive you for hanging around... with that pitiful look on your face. You're sorry to be alive? You're lonely? What are you? A toddler? Together... or apart... even if we never see each other again... it doesn't matter. As long as you don't forget us... we will always... live on inside you! | ” |
"Ten of Hearts, Part 2" (はあとのじゅう② Hāto no Jū ②?) is the third chapter of the fifth volume and the 22nd chapter overall of the Alice in Borderland manga, written and illustrated by Haro Aso.
Overview[]
Arisu has a vision of Karube, Chota, and Shibuki, who encourage him to keep moving forward after their sacrifice in the Seven of Hearts game, while Usagi, Asahi, and Tatta continue looking for him. An retrieves the knife from Momoka's body and prepares to lift the perpetrator's fingerprints. Aguni kills Taketo, while the Beach continues to be subsumed in chaos. Usagi and the team ends up finding Arisu, and he is finally saved.
Summary[]
Arisu is certain that he is on the brink of death upon realizing that his five senses are starting to wane. Suddenly, he imagines himself sitting alone in a dark room, still wounded and bound to a chair, when illusory images of Karube, Chota, and Shibuki appear before him, dining together at a dinner table. As he listens to their conversation, Arisu's injuries fade and all restraints disappear, allowing him to move and speak. He asks if he can join them at the table, but he is ignored.
With 58 minutes left in the game, 42 players remain. At the poolside, members of the militant faction wonder how many people they have already killed. Niragi starts to worry that they are running out of time and doubts the efficiency of Last Boss' plan.
At Room 509, Usagi, Asahi, and Tatta restrain a militant ally in the bathtub and demand Arisu's location. He tells them that he is on either the third or fourth floor and asks Usagi to shoot him after killing four innocent people himself. However, Usagi spares his life under the belief that she will not copy the militant faction's carnage and disposes of the weapon. She then leaves to find Arisu, followed by Asahi.
Karube narrates the plot of a movie where a group of six people hiked a snowy mountain to rescue one of the men's younger sister, but only three of them came back alive, with the man being happy that his sister survived. Shibuki believes this is selfish, but Chota thinks otherwise, believing that saving one life is worth the sacrifice if that was the intent. Karube concludes that he would not like to be saved if he were the sister, since it would mean that people would die just to rescue him. Hearing this, Arisu realizes that the three of them died for him and begins to apologize for being alive.
Arriving at the main lobby, An, Kuina, and another member of the Beach retrieve the knife from Momoka's body. Kuina points out that the game would not have started if only no one had killed Momoka and concludes that the witch must be someone from Beach who is working with the game's operator. Meanwhile, Taketo meets Aguni and confesses that he cannot continue surviving if it means killing innocent people. With this, Aguni throws him off the window, and he dies.
Arisu continues to apologize to Karube, Chota, and Shibuki, who have taken the form of grotesque caricatures in his imagination. Arisu admits that even though he had done his best to avenge them, he has not accepted their deaths and moved forward with his life. He cries about his loneliness and his desire to meet them again. He then asks to follow them when they begin to leave, but he is ignored once more. Karube certifies their friendship and tells Arisu that he cannot forgive him for pitying himself as the only survivor. He assures Arisu that they will continue to live in his heart as long as he remembers them, which encourages him to wriggle free from his restraints and scream for help.
Moments later, Arisu and Usagi reunite after hearing Arisu's cries for help. Arisu envisions Karube, Chota, and Shibuki smiling as he and Usagi embrace. Afterward, the group explains the Beach's conditions and the mechanics of the Ten of Hearts game. Relieved about his Visa not expiring, Arisu asks them to explain the rules.
