Asahi Kujo (九条 朝陽, Kujō Asahi) is a supporting character in Alice in Borderland, who first appears as one of the Beach members. She is always accompanied by her friend, Momoka. She is portrayed by Mizuki Yoshida.

Appearance[]

Asahi is a young woman with short bob-cut hair. She typically wears a bikini with a yellow T-shirt on top, and a long white necklace.

Personality[]

Asahi is shown to be shy and indecisive in comparison to Momoka. Despite having an upper hand due to her position as a Dealer, she is scared of any interactions with other players, and remains on the sidelines until Momoka's death. Closer to the end of the "Witch Hunt", Asahi finds the courage to sacrifice herself in order to save the remaining survivors, seeing as Arisu and Usagi never stop fighting for what they believe in.

History[]

Asahi was a high school student in Tokyo alongside her best friend, Momoka. At an unknown point, the two were transported to the Borderland together and recruited as Dealers by an unknown man. They helped stage and tag several games before being tasked with posing as players at the Beach. During this time, the pair became acquainted with Kuzuryu, a game master.

Story[]

Season 1[]

Asahi and Momoka first appear watching Arisu and Usagi after their first arrival at the Beach.

The duo remain inseparable and stay away from others. Arisu stumbles upon them having a private conversation, but they instantly run away from him, which makes him think they assumed he was trying to flirt with them.

Asahi discovers Momoka's body alongside the other players and the announcement of the "Witch Hunt" game to find her killer. Other people immediately question Asahi's alibi, since everyone saw the duo constantly together, and she claims she was in her room, but any spark of chaos is enough for Niragi to start pushing, and militants grab her on his order, planning to throw her into the Fire of Judgement. Usagi and Mira block their way, with Mira ordering them to let Asahi go.

When the massacre breaks out, Usagi drags Asahi away and tries to hide her, but Asahi, scared of dying, decides to team up with Usagi, Tatta, and Tatta's friend, Joe, in order to find Arisu. The quartet search the rooms but cannot find him, and Joe gets killed by the militants. Tatta manages to threaten Arisu's location out of Saiko, and they all head up to find him. As Usagi tries to jump window ledges to reach Arisu's room, Tatta and Asahi are attacked by two militants, one of which Asahi manages to knock out. They successfully rescue Arisu, and Asahi participates in the group brainstorming activity in order to solve the murder.

Asahi helps Tatta carry the injured Arisu downstairs, and he claims that Momoka is the Witch herself. Despite this revelation, a riot breaks out, since Aguni has a personal motive to die under the accusation of being the Witch, and the players are about to run out of time before they reach GAME OVER. In order to save her friends, Asahi runs into the middle of the lobby to get everyone's attention, and screams that she is a Dealer of this game before being killed by a laser.

Her death causes the riot to momentarily halt, as Aguni regains his senses, and Ann comes to confirm that the knife has a reverse grip, indicating that the killer held it towards themselves, so Momoka did indeed end her own life.

As Arisu and Usagi discover a couple of days later, Asahi filmed a video on her phone while walking around Shibuya with Momoka. She revealed that they were recruited as Dealers to help with setting up the games, and films their path through the train systems to enter the Dealers base. Asahi purposefully filmed herself entering the code for anyone who finds the video later. After showing some of the Dealers doing their jobs, Asahi apologized to the camera and the players for being the cause of multiple deaths. Momoka then broke down crying, and Asahi hugged her, promising that they would wake up from this dream one day.

Season 2[]

Asahi's name is mentioned in a news broadcast as one of the victims of the Tokyo Meteorite Disaster.

Etymology[]

  • The forename Asahi consists of the kanji "" (asa) (morning) and "" (hi) (sun).
  • The surname Kujou is a combination of the kanji "" (ku) (nine) and "" (jou) (article).
