Alice in Borderland Wiki

This page is the Alice in Borderland Wiki's Manual of Style which is meant to guide our editors in producing consistent and high quality articles.

Please read all our rules and policies!

Topics

1. Article topics and their corresponding information must be factual. This means that rumors, speculations, theories, or any fan-made media and information have no place on the Wiki and therefore shall not be added.
2. Page creations must have a clear topic to stay on the Wiki. Any page that does not concern the Alice in Borderland universe or has an extremely broad topic will be deleted.

Page structure

Each new page must have at least 300 words of meaningful content for SEO purposes. Please DO NOT create articles that contain one sentence, expecting others to expand them. If you see any pages that do not have enough content on them, please feel free to expand them.

When writing/editing articles, please stick to the following heading structure:

1. Appearance
2. Personality
3. History
4. Story
5. Games Played
6. Abilities
7. Relationships
8. Gallery
9. Quotes
10. Trivia / Etymology (only one of them)
11. References
12. See also

If certain headings are missing due to the lack of information, it is acceptable as long as the general order is preserved.

Writing

Formality and neutrality

1. Use a neutral point of view when writing. Any opinion or bias should be expressed in Discussions or on the respective Talk Page, not in the article itself.
• Do NOT write sentences like this: Due to the minimal information about the rules of the game it is hard to come up with strategies <...> or She uses this strategy, which is objectively dumb. Such wording is considered a personal opinion, and it does not serve any purpose from the reader's perspective, since no actual content is given, but the tone is set to present the wiki as a personal fanfiction site rather than an encyclopedia about the topic. Alice in Borderland Wiki is the latter, not the former.
• ✅ Write sentences like this instead: One of the potential strategies could be <...> or The strategy used by X ends up ineffective, because <...>
2. Uncontracted forms such as do not or it is are the default in encyclopedic style; don't and it's are too informal.
3. On encyclopedia articles, avoid such phrases as remember that and note that, which address readers directly in a less-than-encyclopedic tone. Similarly, phrases such as of course, naturally, obviously, clearly, and actually make presumptions about readers' knowledge, and call into question the reason for including the information in the first place. Do not tell readers that something is ironic, surprising, unexpected, amusing, coincidental, unfortunate, etc. This supplies a point of view. Simply state the sourced facts and allow readers to draw their own conclusions.
• Do NOT write sentences like this: They bathe in a hot spring and finally kiss. This adds a personal take to the description, which contradicts the encyclopedic tone.
• ✅ Write sentences like this instead: They bathe in a hot spring and share a kiss.

• Do NOT write sentences like this: Obviously, Chishiya wins the game because he is smart. This adds a personal opinion and prompts the reader to agree or expect such an outcome from the start, which contradicts the overall writing style of the wiki.
• ✅ Write sentences like this instead: Chishiya's skills prove useful, and the game ends in his victory.

Naming

1. All character pages must be named using the character's official name and spelling. The naming convention used on the wiki is Name Surname without special characters.
2. Pages that belong to the Netflix live action adaptation have to be marked accordingly to avoid confusion with the manga. Even if the character only appears in the live-action, their page still has to be labeled as Name Surname (Netflix) (if there is no name or surname, it can be omitted, e.g. Hiro (Netflix)).
3. Certain page names do not follow the best naming conventions on purpose, mainly due to SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
• Borderland is the term most frequently searched by viewers and readers, and since it is also used by Netflix, it is chosen as the page name. Linking to the page should follow this format. However, for natural language flow, it is acceptable to use The Borderland or The Borderlands interchangeably when including the name in article descriptions.
• Character names often have multiple transliteration variants, and the one chosen as the page name is the most frequently searched form. However, it is acceptable to use other versions in descriptions as long as the choice remains consistent throughout the entire article (Chota -> Chouta).
4. When referring to a character on a page, always use the name they are most commonly known by. Some characters are primarily referred to by their surnames (Chishiya, Arisu, Usagi, Matsushita, Yaba), while others are called by their given names (Chota, Mira, Uta, Goken).
• WRONG: "Kanou reveals herself to be a game master." Who?
• CORRECT: "Mira reveals herself to be a game master."

Linking

To add a link in a text, surround the word with brackets (i.e. word).

• Make links only where they are relevant and helpful in the context: Hyperlinks are distracting and may slow the reader down. When linking character pages in articles, link the page with the character's full given name first.
• Add each link once per page, or not more often than once per 3 paragraphs if required. Succeeding mentions of a character in the same paragraph has to use the character's name and must NOT be linked to their page.
• Favor Fandom wiki links. External links to other Fandom wikis are allowed and encouraged over all other external links as long as they are relevant to the article. Fandom wiki links should be preferred over Wikipedia links.

Language

1. Use clear and grammatically correct English when adding new content. Do not use Google Translate or any other automated translation tool without actual knowledge of the language.
2. Use American spelling. Viz Media and FANDOM are both American companies, so the Wiki uses American English as its official language.
3. Keep all verb tenses consistent.
• All summaries have to be written in the present tense.
• History sections of character pages have to be written in past tense.
• If the content of a portion of a chapter or episode is a flashback to a previous story point, it has to be written in past tense.
4. No usage of profanity.
5. Cardinal numerals are written out until they reach ten.
• "One person", "three cars", "eight days", but "12 players", "20 games", etc.
• Ordinal numerals are written as numbers:
PhraseStructure
three cars numeral + counted noun
Round 3noun + numeral (as label)
6. For rōmaji, the Hepburn romanization system is used.
• Nijirō Murakami and not Nijirô Murakami.

Punctuation

1. Use Oxford comma.
2. Place periods and commas outside quotation marks when the punctuation is not part of the quoted material (logical punctuation).
• WRONG: My name isn't "you," it's "Shibuki."
• CORRECT: My name is not "you", it is "Shibuki".
3. Use "straight" quotes, not curly. The same rule applies for single quotes or apostrophes: ', not ‘’. Quotation marks and apostrophes in imported material should only be changed if necessary.
4. Dates are written in "month day, year" format. Use cardinal numbers. For single digit numbers, do not add a 0 before it.
• For cardinal numbers: write "January 15, 2017," not "January 15th, 2017.”
• For single digit numbers: write "October 5, 2010," not "October 05, 2010."

Wikitext

1. Headers have to be in the form == Header ==, not in the form ==Header==.
2. Links like Aguni are preferred over links with redirects like Aguni.
3. For links that are possessive, put the "'s" outside the link.
• For example, use Morizono Aguni's instead of Morizono Aguni's.
4. When linking pages on the Wiki, internal links must be used over external links. Internal links allow you to simply put the intended article's name in double brackets.
• For example, Mira Kano creates a link to the Mira Kano page without using an external link that reads like Mira Kano. External links are only used for external sites.
5. All templates are always put in new lines, unless they are specifically intended to be in the same line. For instance, use:
Stub

And not:
Stub

Quotes

The quote template used across the wiki is Quote text..

1. Quote text is treated as a sentence, which means it has to follow basic punctuation rules, including a period/exclamation mark/question mark at the end.
2. Quote attribution, given as the second value in the template (i.e. "Chishiya commenting on Usagi's climbing skills"), is treated as a partial description in a bigger context, therefore it does not end with a period/exclamation mark/question mark, but still follows other basic punctuation rules.

References are used to justify and prove information. Hence, adding citations to one's contributions is very essential. References may either come from manga chapters, anime episodes, or credible external links.
