Alice in Borderland Wiki

Alice in Borderland RETRY (今際の国のアリスRETRY, Imawa no Kuni no Arisu Ritorai), known simply as RETRY, is a direct sequel to the original Alice in Borderland manga, written and illustrated by Haro Aso. The series premiered on the Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine, issue 46 of 2020. The story succeeds the original survival thriller genre. Unlike the previous sequel, Alice on Border Road, which focuses heavily on action-thriller, RETRY returns its focus on game theory.

Synopsis[]

RETRY begins with the returning protagonist, Ryohei Arisu, who once again finds himself trapped in the Borderland and is forced participate in a deadly game, Nine of Hearts, with six other players. Memories come rushing back, and all his experiences from eight years prior appear in front of him once again. He knows what to expect, he knows how cruel the games can be, and he tries his best to survive via tactics, cooperation, and betrayal. He has to leave the Borderland in order to reunite with his wife, Yuzuha Usagi, and the baby she has just given birth to.

Plot[]

Arisu wakes up in an empty Tokyo with no memory of what happened before. While wandering the silent city, he notices a building with electricity and enters, finding a small theme park where five others are already gathered. None of them know why everyone has vanished. Gradually, Arisu remembers his life as a school counsellor, his wife Usagi going into labor, and the accident with the falling billboard that transported them all to the Borderland.

The game begins: Nine of Hearts, "Earth Invasion". Each player receives a phone showing six "LIFE" cards and one "DEATH" card. To survive each alien attack, the participants need to enter a shelter after receiving a "LIFE". At first the players cooperate, but the number of shelters decreases each round, and the players feel forced to choose who is going to die next. Kitou, a calculating doctor, proposes judging whose lives are worth saving. Tensions rise as Taiga's violent nature surfaces, which starts the chain of betrayals and violence.

Yuzuru, a wounded insurance worker haunted by his corrupt past, volunteers to take everyone's "DEATH" cards so that no one else has to die later on. Arisu doubts the plan, but Onoue agrees, which does not save her in the long run due to Kitou's secret way of winning. As the survivors continue, Himari, Yuzuru's daughter, finds out that Kitou purposely cheated and made Taiga lose the lots, which led to him gravely wounding Yuzuru, so Himari uses her "DEATH" card on Kitou.

Arisu eventually uncovers Kitou's secret: he exploited a replica corpse's phone to ensure survival. Exposed, Kitou is forced into cooperation as Arisu devises a plan to redirect all "DEATH" cards to the corpse's phone and exchange "LIFE" cards between the survivors. The strategy succeeds, the game is cleared, and the survivors awaken in Kitou's hospital. Arisu rushes to find Usagi, who gives birth to their daughter.
